PURG Dive 1 - 26-06-2010

14 divers travelled to the Maze mooring to be introduced to the Reef Life Survey procedures. With methods already explained to participants at the shop it was time to demonstrate procedures on a dive.

Michelle and I were to do a survey while Alex, Russell, Kerrie and Brett would follow and observe. Tying off on the anchor we travelled in a N.W direction. The survey was over a variety of terrain with gutters and sandy bottom. The fish life was quite abundant with the usual species in good numbers.

Back onboard we made sure everyone was clear on what to do before we geared up for the second dive. On this dive Kerrie and Brett would do a survey while Michelle observed and Alex and Russell would do a survey while I observed. Both surveys were done with no problems.

Back at the shop we then proceeded to demonstrate the methods for Data entry and fish identification. All the participants showed great enthusiasm and no problems with identification or Data entry.

Due to the numbers the other divers were given cameras and told to explore photograph and identify critters. These divers will be doing the surveys on the next dive.
